Is a first responder kit legal for civilians to carry and use?

Yes. Civilian ownership and use of first responder kits, trauma bags, and tourniquets is legal in all 50 states. Good Samaritan laws protect civilians using reasonable first aid skills in good faith.

Do I need medical training to use a first responder kit?

Not legally, but training is strongly recommended. Free or low-cost options include Stop the Bleed (2 hours), Red Cross First Aid/CPR (4 to 6 hours), and Wilderness First Aid (16 hours). Training dramatically improves effectiveness.

What is included in a first responder kit, and is it enough for a serious bleeding injury?

A full first responder kit includes a CAT tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, pressure dressings, chest seals, trauma shears, gloves, and airway supplies. This covers severe bleeding, tension pneumothorax, and airway obstruction, the top three preventable causes of death from trauma.

Can I add my own supplies to a pre-made trauma bag?

Yes. All of our trauma bags have organizer pockets or MOLLE webbing for adding personal supplies (prescription medications, epinephrine, allergy medications, training cards). Add-ons should not remove or block access to core trauma components.

How often do items like tourniquets and gauze expire?

CAT tourniquets: replace every 5 years or immediately after any field use. Combat gauze: 5-year shelf life. Sterile gauze: 5 years. Chest seals: 5 years. Always check printed expiration dates and replace heat-damaged items early.

Should I get a smaller kit for my car and a larger one for home?

Yes. An IFAK-sized trauma kit in your vehicle (glove box or seat back) and a larger trauma bag at home covers the most common scenarios. Workplace users should also consider a pocket-sized Stop the Bleed kit.

Are there separate kits for gunshot wounds vs car accident trauma?

No. The core trauma supplies are the same: tourniquet, gauze, chest seal. Specialized kits add scenario-specific items (burn sheets for vehicle fires, hemostatic gauze for penetrating trauma). A well-stocked trauma kit covers both scenarios.
