Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about emergency pet food and supplies, from how much to store and how long it lasts to what else your pet needs when disaster strikes — because your pets are part of the family, and their emergency plan should be too.

How much food and water should I store for my pet?

Store at least 3 days of food and water per pet, and up to 14 days if you live in a disaster-prone area. Water and food needs vary by animal size, breed, and age — consult your veterinarian for specific guidance.

Does pet food have a shelf life like human emergency food?

Yes. Dry kibble in sealed bags: 12 to 18 months unopened. Canned pet food: 2 to 5 years. Freeze-dried and dehydrated pet food: 5 to 10 years. Rotate dry food every 6 months once opened.

Do you carry emergency supplies for dogs, cats, birds, or exotic pets?

We offer cat- and dog-specific kits, but not other animals at this time.

What should I keep in my pet's emergency kit aside from food?

A collapsible bowl, water, leash and collar, medications, vaccination records, a recent photo, microchip info, a pet first aid kit, a blanket or towel, waste bags, and comfort items (a toy or blanket with home scent).

How do I rotate pet food in my emergency kit?

Use FIFO: first-in, first-out. Label kit food with the purchase date. Every 6 months, open kit food for daily feeding and replace with fresh. Check for any swelling, off-smell, or insect contamination.
