Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about triage kits, from how they work and who can use them to capacity and compliance requirements — because in a mass casualty event, organized response saves more lives than chaos.

What is a triage kit used for?

A triage kit is used during mass casualty incidents to rapidly categorize victims by injury severity. The kit includes triage tags, markers, and reference cards so responders can sort patients into immediate, delayed, minor, or deceased categories.

Do your triage tags follow the START system?

Yes. Our triage tags use the START (Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment) system, the national standard for civilian mass casualty triage. Pediatric triage uses JumpSTART on the same tag format.

How many patients can one triage kit support?

Our standard triage kit includes 25 tags. Size to the largest plausible casualty count at your site: a small school might need 50 tags; a stadium or large workplace needs 100+ tags per responder team.

Are triage kits required for mass casualty planning at schools or offices?

No, not strictly required by most regulations. Triage capability is recommended in most mass casualty response plans (CDC, FEMA). School districts, large employers, and healthcare facilities typically include triage as a plan element.

Can a layperson use a triage kit, or is it for trained responders only?

Yes, a layperson can use one during a true mass casualty incident, but triage is most effective in the hands of trained CERT, EMT, or first responder personnel. Formal START training (available through local emergency management) is strongly recommended.
