Preparedness for Businesses FAQs

Common Questions

What is "business continuity planning"?

Business Continuity Planning (BCP) documents how a business maintains critical operations during and after a disaster. It covers risk assessment, essential functions, key personnel, alternate facilities, IT/data recovery, supply chain resilience, and communication protocols.

What does OSHA require for workplace emergency planning?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.38 requires Emergency Action Plans for workplaces with more than 10 employees. Plans must cover evacuation procedures, emergency reporting, shelter-in-place, critical operations shutdown, and training. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151 requires first aid supplies per ANSI/ISEA Z308.1.

How do I make an office emergency plan?

Identify hazards, designate roles (evacuation captain, first aid, communications), map evacuation routes, set assembly points, establish shelter-in-place procedures, stock supplies (first aid, water, PPE), post emergency contacts, and train all employees annually.

How do I conduct an emergency drill at work?

Schedule drills quarterly (fire) or annually (e.g. earthquake, shelter-in-place). Announce beforehand or run unannounced after staff are trained. Time the evacuation, debrief immediately afterward, document attendance and issues, and update the plan based on lessons learned.

What compliance frameworks apply to workplace safety?

OSHA (federal workplace safety), ANSI/ISEA (first aid kits, PPE, safety vests), NFPA (fire protection), state-specific requirements (California CalOSHA IIPP, for example), and industry-specific standards (HIPAA for healthcare, PCI DSS for retail).
