      Emergency Bars

Posted by SS on 8th Aug 2020

Received my emergency bars the other day! They came quickly and look just like they do in the pictures. My one complaint at this point is that the box they came in said Emergencykits on it. I live in an apartment complex where packages are left in a common area. I would have preferred a non descript box so as to not tempt anyone else to walk off with the package. As for the product itself, I have not tried it yet but glad to have them!

      Great Idea but Needs Tweaking

Posted by Megan T. on 20th Jan 2020

It’s a great price for 2400 calories. That said, once you open a package of 6 bars, you are committed to eating them all in a relatively short period. The shelf life of 5 years is for an unopened package. I want to try one to see if I like it enough to order more. It would be nice if they packaged the bars individually inside the main pack. I didn’t taste the lemon flavor that the marketing mentioned while I was eating the bar, but there was a distinct lemon aftertaste. The taste and texture is that of a shortbread cookie without any sweetness. I wonder what kind of oil is used that does not go rancid after 1 year. I am super sensitive to the taste of rancid food so I will do another taste test and review in a year. The bars are fairly good and I would welcome them in an emergency. However, the recommended caloric intake on the package is wrong. The package recommends 2 bars per adult per day or 800 calories. A non emergency adult diet is 2000 calories per day. In most emergent situations, you actually need more calories to deal with the stress. As such, one pack of 6 squares per adult per day (2400 calories) would be insufficient. They should come in packs of 8 bars.

They are very heavy and bulky (each package weighs 0.8 lbs.) and it would be difficult to carry more than 1 to 2 packs in a bug out bag. For that I still think light weight highly nutritious foods like dried beans are better.

Mainstay Emergency Food Ration 2400 Calorie

Posted by Phyllis Lichtenstein on 8th Aug 2019

I purchased a 14-day supply of the 2400 calorie/day food rations for my husband's "survival" kit in the event of a major earthquake. Our home is directly on the San Andreas fault. Neither of us have tasted the ration and probably won't until we have to. The only negatives I have are: 1. although each bar is small and compact, all 14 bars together are very heavy; and 2. their shelf life is only 5 years.

      2400 Food ration

Kids and I tried the rations as a practice. Was like eating a dense cupcake; not sweet, but not dry either. Not sure how long 400calories of energy (one square) would last us in an emergency but we did not feel like we were still hungry after eating one either. Shelf life of 5 years is great, as there no need to worry about it for a while.
Hoping we never have to use the rations, but we're comfortable in case we do.

Great way to replace outdated food and water

Posted by Marla on 21st Mar 2016

Perfect way to update the expired water and food in our Emergency Kits!!

Count them out and replace, how easy is that?

It's better than spending money on full replacement cost of an Emergency back-pack.

Don't forget to also replace the glow sticks!!
